|06:21 am - My fabulous trip to Italia/the terrible aftermath|
So I have so many exciting things to tell about Italy (and to those nearest and dearest don't get too upset if you don't learn these things in person you will be called or you should call me for the details).
Let's see, after many hours of delay on both flights to get to Rome we arrived in Rome on Thursday 10am local time/4am American time (yuck). We then drove for the better part of the day to Montecatini this really cute little town where we would sleep for the next 4 days.
While stationed in Montecatini (I can't spell, but it's Italian so it's okay right?), we visited San Gimingano, Sienna, and Florence (Firenze). I don't really have a favorite, but I definitely prefer the little towns to the big cities!
The Suzuki Tour had the first performance on Easter Sunday in Montecatini. It's a spa town, so we actually performed in this little theater in a spa. The concert went really well and the Europeans loved the Italian music that we played.
Do not get me started on European restrooms/Waterclosets/Toilettes. Let's just say that when you have to go you have to go even if drastic measures must be taken.
Easter Monday (which is a huge holiday for the Italians) we departed for Sorrento a wonderful resort town. On the way we visited Orvieto a little town famous for its white wine, and Montecassino, which is famous because of the abbey. Let me tell you, the view on top of that mountain was breath taking!
There was a huge traffic jam in Sorrento so we did get to our hotel until really late. However the next day was really fun because we spent it in Capri. Will and I got hooked on blood oranges there yum! We had our second concert back in Sorrento, it wasn't as wonderful as the first, but the kids did a good job.
The next day we went to Mt. Vesuvius and Pompeii. You'll have to call me to get all of the details it was amazing!
The next day we spent the morning shopping in Sorrento and then rode back to Rome. By then the Pope was in really bad shape. When we were visiting the Vatican museum and St. Peter's Square the next day there were lots of rumors flying and several official looking people walking around. On Saturday morning we went on a walking tour of the city and shopped and ate. That night we went to the vigil for the Pope in St. Peters for about an hour. Will managed to get a few minutes of video of the processional etc. That was a very emotional experience. We left about an hour before the Pope's death was announced.
Sunday was spent travelling, our international flight back to the US was much better than the one going over. Going to Rome the flight attendants were water nazis. You could get all the coke you wanted but little to no water. Our flight from New York to Charlotte was delayed for three hours. We didn't get back to the apartment until 1 am Monday morning with NO SLEEP. UGH.
The trip was wonderful, however this week I've been really sick, it turns out that I have a Kidney stone. Lemme tell you it's been no picnic, but I'm sooo glad that it didn't get me in Italy.
So I apologize for the length of this post.
BTW I got engaged in Florence
